High Street - The Gables

One of the most impressive houses in the village, The Gables was for many years (certainly since the 1890s and probably since 1843) the home of the village's doctor. When Dr. Bashall retired the house stayed in the family and the new doctors moved the surgery to various locations before it finally came to rest in the purpose built premises at Sprays.

The late Ian Bashall told me that when he fully renovated the building after inheriting it from his father he discovered that it was basically an old timber framed building which had at some distant time been greatly extended both length wise and upwards. My research shows that until about 1830 the house formed part of a farmyard complex which extended some way into the High Street however by 1844 the building obstructing the road had gone. It is probable that it was at this time the building was enlarged and the distinctive gables added in order to house the newly arrived Dr Bartlett who move to the village from Great Bedwyn some time between 1842 and 1848.
