Women's Institute 1952

Burbage W.I. was formed in the 1920s and disbanded in about 1999. An early home, and one which it kept until the 1960s, was the Old Methodist Chapel. It can be seen behind the ladies in this photo. The building was built in 1823 and served as a church until the new chapel was opened on the High Street in 1907. From then until after the Great War it was used by the C of E's Church men's group (C.E.M.S.).

After being abandoned by the W.I. the building was sold and became a shop then, as now, a house. It stands along a public footpath from Eastcourt (opposite the parish church) to the High Street.

This photograph was taken in 1952 from what is now the school's playing field. Thank you to Alex McGahey for the following information:

"front left is Mrs. Mackelden, whose husband ran The Stores in the High Street., the lady with the white hair beside her is Mrs. Betty Blanchard, wife of Donald Blanchard of the Manor, High Street. Standing left behind Mrs. B (in dark glasses) is Mrs. Muriel Williams, nee Cummins, they lived in what was Easton View [now part of Eastcourt Road]. The tall lady with half a white collar showing is Mrs. Nellie Pike, she was well over 90 and living in Lavington Close/ Webbs Way when I got the info in June this year [1998]."

Mavis Haigh (nee West) has also identified her 2 aunts. Standing far left is Marion Lans (nee Lampard) and next to her is Joan Pearce (nee Lampard).
