Seymour Pond (known as Suthmere in 1259 and Sirmore in 1773) lies at the southern end of Burbage's long High Street. Although fully owned by the Marquess of Ailesbury in 1843, by the beginning of the twentieth century it had become the joint property of Margreen Farm and Thomas Popejoy. The latter's part was bought by Mr. B.T. Ford, a prominent local and one-time chairman of the Parish Council. He later gave his part and the surrounding land to the parish and the deed obliges the Parish Council to maintain a stock proof fence through the pond. The remainder of the pond (that which lies furthest away from the road) still belongs to Margreen Farm while some of the Parish Council's land has been used to widen the High Street. This photograph, taken from the High Street in about 1920, shows the stock proof fence. The trees and open field in the distance have now been replaced by houses.
These 2 photos were taken in 1998, the first looking towards the Grafton Road and the second towards the centre of the village.
