Tennis Party, 1937 |
The first tennis club in Burbage was formed in 1932. The inspiration seems to have come from the Rev. Baker who also allowed the vicarage lawn to be used as a court for a couple of years before the club moved to a more permenant home on the adjacent Glebe Meadow. The club survived the war until finally folding in 1957 by which time the court on Glebe Meadow was unplayable and the club played on private courts such as that at Sudden Farm. Its survival for so long was in no small way down to the efforts of the Fall and Mackelden families who played active roles thoughout the life of the club. None of the named people in this photo were committee members but it is probable that the event was associated with the club. Any additional information would be appreciated as would any information about the formation and activities of the current club. |
