The Evolution of Roads in the Parish of Burbage

Introduction

The middle of the 19th century seems like a natural time at which to divide the study of Burbage's road network. Prior to that date the layout had either naturally evolved or been aided by enclosure, turnpike or canal. However after 1850 more orchestrated changes took place; either by landowners, farmers, railways or the Highway Boards (or their bureaucratic successors). So this first part tries to trace the evolution of the parish's early road system up to end of the enclosure movement but prior to the coming of the railways.

The article is illustrated with 10 maps, 8 of which can be enlarged by clicking on the image in the text. Please be aware that some of these maps are very large.
