APPENDIX 2

Ram Alley Fish Ponds - entry in Sites & Monuments Survey

Four ponds depicted on map based on 14th century or earlier original. Three to south of Ram Alley lane and one to north. Only two can now be identified - 1¼ and ½ hectare respectively. They lie in a north-south valley with scarps and retaining banks up to 2.2 metres high. Origin and purpose unknown but resemble fish-stews. Marshy ground extending over area of c.½ hectare probably indicates site of third pond.
