Ram Alley Fish Ponds - entry in Sites & Monuments Survey |
Four ponds depicted on map based on 14th century or earlier original. Three to south of Ram Alley lane and one to north. Only two can now be identified - 1¼ and ½ hectare respectively. They lie in a north-south valley with scarps and retaining banks up to 2.2 metres high. Origin and purpose unknown but resemble fish-stews. Marshy ground extending over area of c.½ hectare probably indicates site of third pond. |
