BURBAGE MARRIAGES - 1837 - 1900 |

The Births and Deaths Registration Act of 1836 and the Marriage Act of the same year resulted in the establishment of the General Register Office to administer the registration of all births, deaths, and marriages in England and Wales. Concurrent with the enforcement of both of these acts from the 1st of July 1837, a new form to record marriages in the local Church of England parish registers was introduced. In the Burbage parish register, this new form differed only slightly from that in use since 1754; the primary difference being that the bride and groom had to each provide the name of their father and his occupation, an unintended boon to genealogy researchers of today. The marriage register for Burbage parish for the years 1837 through 1900 contains 494 entries. Where there was a difference in the spelling of a name - one version as entered by the vicar or parish clerk versus another version as signed by the bride, groom, or witness - this transcription presents the name as it was signed. That occasionally resulted in obviously incorrect names being entered (e.g., “Daivs” instead of “Davis”), but I thought it was important to enter the names as the people themselves spelled them. I have made no attempt to correct any of the other errors that were in the register, so some incorrect spellings are presented as they were written. In those instances where I was unable to determine with certainty exactly what word was written I have appended a “?”. I abbreviated some terms in order to present a more easily readable transcription of the register. The following abbreviations were used:
I also used the abbreviation <ng> to indicate where information was called for on the registration form, but was not given. John Frivance - May 17, 2005 |
